Interrail Global Trip | DAY 4 | All Rivers Lead to Rotterdam | 12/6/2024
For my final travel day of my first Interrail pass, I decide to explore the two largest cities of the Netherlands, which was initially one of the first things I wanted to do since knowing about Interrail many years ago. Thus, I decide to cross the border on a regional express to Venlo, before riding a variety of NS IC trains to Utrecht, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Thereafter, I explore the parts of Rotterdam and Amsterdam (both had excellent waterfront areas) that I wanted to see, before heading back to Dusseldorf where my hotel was.
While I wanted to use the ICE International service, which normally goes direct to Amsterdam from Dusseldorf, this particular service was diverted at the time I ...

After a weekend break back home, I'm back on the continent for the next part of my Interrail Global Pass. This time, I ride across Germany from Dusseldorf (where my hotel is) all the way to Berlin, a city I've been wanting to visit for a while. Damn... While the setting is not completely accurate and the game is limited in its graphic capabilities, it's still shocking to me to see how easily I recognized the place... I lived in Lancaster for a few years (in the building just in front of the train station actually) and worked at Costa Coffee in that very station, so you could say I'm quite familiar with the surroundings, and seeing this really brought me back to the (pre-)COVID period, when I lived there. Thanks for the video (and the time travel)!

Yeah, it's amazing that they managed to recreate all this on a 1:1 scale in the first place; even more so that this particular map has the entire Preston to Carlisle route on the WCML. Granted, this is one of the older content on Train Simulator. You should look up videos of one of the newer Train Sim Classic routes like Hope Valley Line (Sheffield to Manchester) by JustTrains or King's Cross to King's Lynn by Alan Thomson. The sheer amount of detail and custom-modelled assets on those maps will blow your mind. North Wales Coast (developed by DTG in-house) is my personal favourite, given I know Bangor inside and out, so it was amazing how detailed it was in the game that I could recognise every inch of it. PS: It must have been super convenient living in front of a railway station with regular long-distance services; that's my dream location.

@@AymanTravelTransport I played most of TSW routes and I really love what they've done with the game (though I am desperately waiting for the Flåmsbanen route... Most scenic route in the world if you ask me!), but I have a soft spot for the Lancaster-Morecambe line as I rode it fairly often. The one I took the most was the Lancaster-Penrith one, as I taught in Penrith for a bit, and there were quite lovely landscapes once you'd passed Kendal. Yeah, living in by Lancaster train station was really nice, as I absolutely love this kind of setting (had even started getting into Trainspotting, but stopped once I had to move back to France as it's not nearly as easy to do here...) and as you said, very practical when travelling! Are you from the region yourself?

@@pluviophilius2354 with the right enhancements, TSC can actually look better than TSW. I lived in Greater Manchester for 8 years and now live in Blackburn, not too far from there. I travel up to Edinburgh from Preston quite a lot so I'm very familiar with the full route (Lancaster to Penrith is definitely the most scenic bit), and even visited Lancaster a while back. I really liked how the castle was right next to the station, and recall how peaceful it was there. I'd like to visit Morecambe sometime though; I've noticed they got an Aldi by the beach, that's got me sold! I initially grew up near Cambridge and then lived in North Wales briefly while my dad worked in Bangor Uni, before we all moved to Manchester.

@@AymanTravelTransport What kind of enhancements for TSC are you talking about? I'd love to get back to Train Sims, but I've lost interest after playing the same routes over and over again in TSW. I don't really recommend Morecambe to be honest. It feels a bit like a ghost town, and apart from the amazing sunsets you get from the pier, there isn't really much to do/see there.

@@pluviophilius2354 the Armstrong Powerhouse track enhancement pack and sky / weather enhancement pack for starters; these two DLCs ramp up the quality of many popular routes to an insane degree. There are a few other third-party enhancement packs here and there, but I can't remember which ones. I mainly stick to TSC for that very reason; far more routes available nowadays (it's actually surpassed MSTS now) than for TSW because of greater third-party development support. TSW still doesn't have an in-game route builder like TSC always had, because consoles won't support it and they don't want the PC version of TSW to have an unfair advantage over the console version. Cheers for the heads up about Morecambe, haven't got the chance to visit it yet, but I was thinking of doing a quick hop there for a bit while on a daytrip to Lancaster in the future. I guess I'll stick to St Annes-on-Sea if I want a quieter alternative to Blackpool; my wife and I loved that place!

Yeah, I'm already feeling the urge to go off on another one, although I'd have to wait for the high season to die down. This would mean finding the necessary Eurostar passholder reservations less than a week in advance to set up the challenge. Thereafter, see where I can go without reservations on day trains and then at night, rely purely on overnight trains that either don't require reservations (plenty of IC and ICE trains like that I recently found) or can be reserved on the day.

A great recommendation for an all-line rover, would be a complete circumnavigation of the UK (that is - following the coast all the way round and back up the other side). It requires two bus "bridges" - Whitby to Scarborough, and Fishguard to Aberystwyth. (plus the use of the Ffestiniog railway). On Scotlands west coast, it needs the ferry plus bus automatic connection via the Isle of Skye, to link Mallaig with Kyle. There is just one remaining dilemma - the numerous branch lines in Devon and Cornwall which nearly all link important locations on the coast, but which are all dead-end shuttles. And one final one - up north in Blackpool. You definitely would need the 14 day ticket because the lines round Sunderland, Lowestoft, and on the other side - zigzagging around the Wirral, Southport and Ormskirk, are all served by local stopping services. Yeovil needs the local bus transfer (the walk along the main rd. is dangerous). And there you have it. How long do you think it would take, ? And what about the branch line shuttles.?

Damdest cheek!!!!! I have some news - read on...... You remember that I mentioned (when you were commenting on Ashford Internstional) that I had texted the respective Deputé regarding the parallel situation across the Manche - well I've just seen an on-line edition of la Voix du Nord (the equivalent of the Manchester Evening News) that he has had a meeting with the transport minister and the local people are threatening to block the line if the trains don't stop at Fréthun. "These trains from London come whistling through our patch, yet have the damdest cheek not to stop chez nous - sacré bleu.!!!". You know how the French are - they don't mess about - the big question is - will it be cows parked on the line, tractors, or what?? And the police don't interfere with farmers !! The SNCF of-course are a large shareholder in Eurostar, so it shouldn't be too difficult to know whose back to scratch. Anyway, if all works out, there's the option for any rail rover enthusiast who might want to add a unique little twist to his rail rover schedule.!!! I mentioned about the day return to France, and you STILL have time to use your rover to get to the port AND to get back in the early evening to wherever. Of-course, if anyone is fanatical about having to bang their rover every day all day without a break, then let them be just content to sit in trains all day long.! Yes, everything train wise is a bit different in Cornwall. There are so many branch lines, that require the main line to stop at every station. And what you may not know is that even if a station is not a junction, there are still all important bus connections radiating out like the spokes of a wheel. If I give just one example - the world famous Eden Project - the bus from St. Austell takes you right outside.

Makes sense given the populations around every stop are much lower than in Devon, so that extra connectivity is vital. Thus, both local and long distance services stop everywhere.

Yes, I agree - we have experience of interrailing, and we've found from experience that you need to break your journey about every 4 hours, to stretch your legs, have a comfortable toilet session, and we don't like wasting money on railway snacking, so we'll head into some side street for some bargain real food, very often with a free glass of wine.

Fascinating journey. Is the Rochdale line more scenic than the Stalybridge-Huddersfield line? We're not from the North, so it's nice to find out about these things. We CAN however tell you about lines in this part of the world, if ever you're interested. The beauty of the All Liner is - it's the only rover which gives you more or less complete freedom in the South East, but you CAN use an Oyster day pass on everything in Greater London, including all buses, trams, and non-tourist Thames commuter water buses. One very interesting thing to do is to go round the Circle Line tube and visit all the main line stations, like famous St.Pancras, and tiny little Fenchurch St. You can also be overwhelmed by Clapham Junction where there is never one minute all day when a train will not be passing.!!! You can go to Dover and see France with the naked eye (you don't even need binoculars). You can make a day excursion and get free food and wine (if you pay the £26 fare), but you will need your passport, even though you'll come back the same day to continue with your all liner on Britain's only domestic high speed service.!

I'd say they're both just as scenic in different ways. Caldervale line goes through valleys between Todmorden and Halifax, while the Huddersfield Line speeds through the hills on the moors. I'm fairly familiar with the London network, along with them travelcards and oyster/contactless, as I used to travel around London with my family as a kid back when I lived in Essex. I was planning to do Dover after coming back up from the West Country, but decided to just focus on Canterbury that day. It was raining when I was down there anyway, so it was a good decision. Great shout though, I've always thought of Dover as the place where it'd feel like going to France.

I have just watched your 5 days of your all line rover and have enjoyed the format where you have shown us some of the towns visited well as the travel. Can I just ask a couple of things. Please can you leave your longer captions on screen for a bit longer as I have frequently missed some of the facts you have given. The other point for me is that in your town and city visits maybe too long is shown of the shops and shopping centres rather than the historical features of the town or city. For example at Canterbury you showed only very brief glimpses of the cathedral from a distance but spent a lot of the video in the shopping area. Small points I know but I am looking forward to seeing the last 2 days of your rover. You look as though you had fun. Thanks again for sharing

Thank you very much for your feedback. I have actually uploaded the final day of my All Line Rover not too long ago (went to Chichester and Portsmouth), as I skipped one day to have a break before doing one more. Yeah, it was quite difficult to determine how long I should leave each caption for, as it appears I read them too fast when I tested each one. I'll take this onboard next time I do a captioned video, however. You can use the spacebar to pause and resume, however, for any of the captions that go by too fast. As for city walks, I generally like to show a mix of the old and the new, especially given I didn't give myself enough time to explore them. However in videos where I do spend more time in a city, such as my daytrips to Hereford and Lincoln the year before, you will probably see more of the historic features. Hopefully, this may be something to focus on for future videos, if I revisit any of the towns or cities. In any case, it was definitely a lot of fun having the freedom to hop on (almost) any train I want to anywhere in the country, thanks again for stopping by.

Did you have a one or two week rover? The two week works out cheaper per day, but I know its not that cheap anyway. I would thoroughly recommend under 26's and Seniors to do it - the one third discount is definitely a boost, and although both these groups have their own discounts on individual tickets, THEY'RE NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL AFTER ABOUT 9am M-F. So that's where these two groups score with an all-liner.

    • @AymanTravelTransport
      @AymanTravelTransport 6 месяцев назад

I did the one week rover, as it was my first time doing it and that was already an intense amount of continuous travelling. Also, I use the 16-25 railcard and last time I checked, there was no time restriction for this one unless they changed it recently.

Hi! That was a nice and interesting video, a different perspective on my home city and I enjoyed watching it :-D If you come back one day, be sure to have a walk along the former GWR railway line (these days it's a shared-use path from Aldi to Belmont, and a nice walk/ride), and some of the remaining parts of the city wall. We also have some nice riverside walking available :-) Those works outside the station have not really progressed since your visit though! I shall have to subscribe and see what else you get up to!
